Community groups receive funding to support local environmental projects

More than 9,000 people in Leeds have participated in climate-related activities following a series of community grants awarded to local organisations. The funding, distributed through the Climate Action Leeds Community Grants programme, has supported a variety of projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental awareness within neighbourhoods.

Details of the funding and projects

The grants were delivered in partnership with Together for Peace and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund. Over 2023 and 2024, more than £130,000 was invested across 41 grants to community organisations in Leeds.

The programme forms part of the wider Climate Action Leeds project, which has the goal of creating a zero carbon, more nature-friendly, and socially just city by the 2030s.

The funded projects encompass a broad spectrum of community-led initiatives, including:

  • Community gardens
  • Composting schemes
  • Local radio programmes
  • Street festivals

Alongside environmental benefits, the projects have reportedly had positive effects on participants’ wellbeing and community connection. According to data from the programme:

  • Over 1,500 people reported an increased appreciation for nature and the environment
  • 624 individuals experienced a stronger sense of belonging within their community
  • 400 people acquired new practical skills related to sustainability

The initiative aims to create lasting impact by developing community spaces and equipping residents with knowledge and skills to continue reducing carbon emissions, growing food locally, and supporting biodiversity.
