GCSE results open new educational paths for learners of all ages

Students across Leeds have received their GCSE results, marking significant milestones in their educational journeys. Among those celebrating were young learners from the 14+ Academies and adult students returning to education, each looking ahead to new opportunities enabled by their achievements.

14+ Academies offer alternative learning routes

The 14+ Academies provide an alternative to mainstream schooling or home education for 14 to 16-year-olds. These academies aim to support students through innovative teaching methods and a tailored learning environment.

One notable success story is 16-year-old Bella Burling, who achieved a grade in her English Language GCSE. Bella plans to continue her education by starting a dance course at the London Studio Centre, following her strong exam performance.

Adult learners progress towards healthcare careers

Adult students have also marked progress with their GCSE and Functional Skills qualifications, supporting their ambitions in health-related fields.

  • Ben Cameron achieved a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification in English and a grade 5 in GCSE maths, studied across Leeds City College and Leeds College of Building. He plans to enrol in a Level 2 health and social care course, alongside English GCSE studies, before progressing to an access course in health and social science and eventually university-level paramedic science.
  • Ben reflected on his positive college experience compared to school, noting the supportive tutors and the voluntary nature of college attendance as key factors in his progress.
  • Holly Freemantle completed a three-year study of maths, achieving a grade 4 in GCSE maths, following her earlier success in English GCSE. Balancing studies with work and parenthood, Holly aims to pursue an access to health science course as a step towards a nursing career.
  • Gabriella Morley earned a grade 5 in GCSE maths, which will enable her to progress onto a midwifery course.

These achievements highlight the diverse pathways available to learners of different ages and backgrounds in Leeds, with education providers supporting students to meet their goals in both academic and vocational fields.
