Professor Niina Kolehmainen Appointed to Child Health Chair

New clinical academic role established at CHORAL

CHORAL (Child Health Outcomes Research at Leeds) has announced the appointment of Professor Niina Kolehmainen as its first clinical academic health and care professions’ chair. This newly created position aims to strengthen research and clinical practice in child health within the Leeds region.

Extensive experience in child health

Professor Kolehmainen brings over 20 years of experience in clinical practice, research, and leadership focused on child health. Beginning her career as an occupational therapist, she has worked across various paediatric settings, including acute and community mental health services, as well as in research roles.

Prior to joining CHORAL, Professor Kolehmainen was based at Newcastle University, where she led large-scale multidisciplinary research projects. Her work concentrated on improving outcomes for children facing health and developmental challenges.

Significance of the new role

Professor Kolehmainen described the appointment as a notable development in her career, highlighting that this is the first time a combined clinical academic position of this nature has been available to her. She noted that previously, such roles had to be created through research funding rather than established posts.

She also commented on the innovative nature of the role at a national level, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of integrating clinical practice with academic research in child health professions.
