New facility dedicated to motor neurone disease care and research

The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) was officially opened on Monday 3rd November 2025. The centre’s construction was completed less than 18 months after the passing of Rob Burrow, a former Leeds Rhinos rugby league player who was diagnosed with MND.

Development timeline and fundraising

  • February 2024: Final designs for the centre were published.
  • June 2024: Construction began, with ground-breaking taking place one day after Rob Burrow’s death was announced.
  • December 2024: The fundraising target of £6.8 million was reached.
  • November 3, 2025: Official opening of the centre.

The £6.8 million fundraising campaign was led by Leeds Hospitals Charity and received significant support from Kevin Sinfield, the wider Leeds Rhinos community, and over 17,000 donors.

Opening ceremony

The centre was officially opened during a BBC Breakfast broadcast, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by Rob Burrow’s six-year-old son, Jackson, alongside consultant neurologist Dr Agam Jung. The event marked the culmination of a community-driven effort to establish a dedicated facility for MND.

Purpose of the centre

The Rob Burrow Centre for MND aims to provide specialised care and support for individuals affected by motor neurone disease. It also serves as a hub for research into the condition, with the goal of improving treatment and patient outcomes.

The centre stands as a symbol of community solidarity and commitment to addressing the challenges posed by MND.
