July 7, 2026Club captain optimistic about promotion prospects
Guiseley AFC captain Lebrun Mbeka has signed a new contract to continue his third spell with the club ahead of the 2026/27 season. The 29-year-old expressed confidence in the team’s chances of challenging for promotion back to the National League North.
Mbeka’s outlook for the season
Mbeka spoke positively about the club’s direction under manager Ian Richards and the support from the Board of Directors. He acknowledged the disappointment of last season’s relegation but emphasised the players’ responsibility to push for a return to higher leagues.
“I believe in the manager, the squad and the Board of Directors we have and I am confident that with the new additions that we will be challenging for a return to National League North and eventually the National League,” Mbeka said. He added, “It is up to us now as players to make that happen as the manager and Board have put everything else in place.”
Versatility and team dynamics
Mbeka is known for his versatility, capable of playing in central defence or midfield. He mentioned his willingness to play wherever required, including a more advanced midfield role, and even joked about playing in goal if necessary.
He praised the manager’s impact since taking charge, noting improvements in team performance and morale. “When Ian came in we were fighting relegation and he got us moved up. He is a good manager and there is a good atmosphere around the place – in the changing room and out on the pitch,” Mbeka said.
Club ambitions and developments
The club aims to return to the National League, with the immediate target being promotion to the National League North. Mbeka highlighted recent squad additions and off-field improvements, such as the new stand at the Railway End and plans for a Fan Zone, as positive signs for the club’s future.
“The club has ambitions moving forward, they want to get back to the National League where they belong but first we have to get back to National League North and that is our target. I think we now have the squad to accomplish that,” he stated.
