New Carer Support Worker Role Funded at Chapel Allerton Hospital
May 14, 2026Support for families of neurological patients increases
Family members of patients admitted to Chapel Allerton Hospital with neurological conditions, such as strokes, often face sudden and significant challenges. These carers frequently have little preparation for their new responsibilities, while also managing the emotional impact of their loved one’s illness and uncertainty about recovery.
Patients with neurological conditions typically require longer hospital stays and complex rehabilitation. This situation can lead to carers experiencing anxiety and feeling overwhelmed, particularly when concerns arise around housing, care arrangements, and financial difficulties.
Rising demand for carer support
Over the past two years, there has been a notable increase in the demand for support from family carers. Referrals to Carers Leeds from Chapel Allerton Hospital have risen sharply, from just three in 2022-23 to 37 in 2023-24, representing a 44% increase.
Funding for a dedicated Carer Support Worker
In response to this growing need, donations totalling £49,985 have been allocated to fund an additional dedicated Carer Support Worker at Chapel Allerton Hospital. Vikki Caroline, employed by Carers Leeds, has taken on this role to provide support to both existing and new carers during what can be a difficult time.
- Supports carers of patients with neurological conditions
- Provides guidance on care arrangements and financial concerns
- Helps reduce anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed
- Responds to increased referrals from Chapel Allerton Hospital
This initiative aims to improve the experience of carers, ensuring they receive practical and emotional support while their loved ones undergo treatment and rehabilitation.
