Maintenance Works to Begin on Leeds Inner Ring Road
August 20, 2026Essential repairs to retaining walls scheduled from September
Essential maintenance work on retaining walls along the Leeds Inner Ring Road is set to commence on Tuesday 1 September 2026. The works form part of a long-term programme aimed at preserving one of the city’s key transport routes.
Details of the maintenance programme
The repairs will take place overnight, between 7pm and 5am, to minimise disruption during daytime travel. The affected section is located between Woodhouse Tunnel and Woodhouse Lane. The works are expected to last approximately 15 weeks, concluding in November 2026.
This scheme represents the first phase of a broader structural maintenance programme for the Inner Ring Road. The route carries over 90,000 vehicles daily and is vital for directing traffic around the city centre, helping to reduce congestion on central streets.
Reason for the works
Many of the retaining walls supporting the highway were constructed more than 50 years ago and are now nearing or have exceeded their original design lifespan. The planned maintenance aims to extend the lifespan of these structures and reduce the likelihood of more significant repairs or emergency closures in the future.
Traffic management and impact
- The majority of the work will be carried out overnight to limit daytime disruption.
- Temporary traffic management measures, including lane and road closures, will be implemented as required.
- Signed diversion routes will be in place where necessary.
- Motorists are advised to plan journeys in advance and allow extra time during the works.
Further information, including specific traffic management details, will be available through the Connecting Leeds website and associated communication channels.
Future maintenance plans
This initial phase is part of a wider strategy to maintain and strengthen key structures along the entire Inner Ring Road. Subject to funding, the next phase of works is expected to begin in early 2027 and may involve more extensive repairs and traffic management.
The council has indicated it will engage with residents, businesses, and other stakeholders ahead of future works to provide advance notice and assist with travel planning.
